Water ballet it's not....
With edgier moves, more physical demands and faster music, synchronized swimming
has come a long way since the days Esther Williams wowed movie audiences with
her graceful dives and perfectly timed strokes. A combination of
gymnastics, dance and swimming, synchronized swimming takes flexibility,
strength, endurance, poise and a keen sense of timing.
"You take a sport like gymnastics, but you take away the floor and hold
your breath and you're still doing lifts and swimming and smiling, all at
the same time" In addition to learning routines, the swimmers must
practice holding their breath and work on basic moves such as the "eggbeater," a
method of treading water (also used by water polo players) that allows them to
calmly
maintain their bodies above the water and keep their arms free to perform movements. |
